Northern Ireland is being transformed steadily into a world-class and progressive region that is now an integral part of the global community. People in the region have a tremendous sense of pride that is coupled with a great passion for life. A growing self-confidence is being fuelled by a thriving economy, increasing wealth, revitalised cities and a unique culture.

From 27 June to 8 July 2007 Northern Ireland will be taking part in the Smithsonian Institution’s Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington D.C. This is a prestigious annual event which draws more than 1 million visitors. It gives Northern Ireland a unique opportunity to promote a positive image of Northern Ireland and to improve understanding in the US of developments taking place in Northern Ireland.

Between St Patrick’s Day and the end of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, the Rediscover Northern Ireland programme will promote Northern Ireland’s arts and culture, the quality of its education, food and drink, and the potential of its tourism, trade and business. Northern Ireland will be presented as a creative, confident, outward looking region, one that wishes to extend its relationship with the United States in ways that are mutually beneficial.

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and the Arts Council are jointly funding an extensive arts and culture programme in Washington DC from March to July 2007 under the Rediscover Northern Ireland programme. This and all other events can be viewed at www.rediscoverni.comOpens new window
