Library Buildings

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure has built and plans to build many Libraries in Northern Ireland

The libraries capital budget for 2007-08 was £4.8 million.  The libraries capital budget in 2008/09 is £6.1m.

Recently completed libraries

Over the past five years DCAL has funded a number of new libraries at  Ballymena, Castlederg,Cookstown, Finaghy, Grove Well Being Centre, Irvinestown, Lisburn, Magherafelt and Strabane. A major refurbishment was carried out at Armagh library.

Libraries currently under construction

Bangor

Work began on a major reconstruction in Bangor in Spring 2007. The project will include demolition of part of the existing library, refurbishment of the remainder and construction of a major new extension. Completion is due in Autumn 2008.

Proposed New Libraries

Antrim

Site work is expected to commence on a new library for Antrim in early 2008 with completion due in Summer 2009/2010.

Dungiven

Work is expected to commence on a replacement library in Dungiven in 2008 with completion in  2009.

Newtownstewart

Major refurbishment is due to start at the existing library in Newtownstewart in 2008 with completion due in 2009.

Carrickfergus

Refurbishment work is expected to commence in early 2009.

Whitehead

Refurbishment work is expected to commence in early 2009.
