Ulster Museum Refurbishment

Ulster Museum Hall of Wonders

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and the Heritage Lottery Fund are contributing to the refurbishment of one of Belfast's most popular visitor attractions, the Ulster Museum. The Ulster Museum re-development is a major renewal project which will result in its reinvention as a world renowned centre for the sharing of knowledge and will reinforce its central role in the cultural life of the Northern Ireland community.  The Museum is currently closed to allow the refurbishment work to get underway.  It is expected to re-open again in the spring of 2009.

This project, the first major investment in 35 years will result in the updating and modernisation of the museum building, exhibition galleries and public facilities. It is hoped that the re-development of this iconic building will act as a beacon for the renaissance of Northern Ireland. It will allow the National Museums to refocus public programming to meet the demands of an increasingly diverse and sophisticated museum audience.

During the period of closure, the Ulster Museum is planning a major outreach programme which will include such activities as loans of the Ulster Museum collections to regional museums, a series of local exhibitions, workshops, lectures and library programmes.
