Safety at Sports GroundsNew legislation on safety at sports grounds, the Safety of Sports Ground (Northern Ireland) Order 2006, has been introduced. DCAL and NIO are currently considering proposals for new sports ground related public order legislation to complement Sport Northern Ireland's Stadia Safety Programme and the new safety legislation. In August 2000 DCAL announced an interim funding package designed to help owners of major stadia in Northern Ireland implement urgent spectator safety improvements at their venues. Funding for the scheme, which was administered by Sport Northern Ireland, up to the end of the 2002/03 financial year, amounted to £6.24 million, of which £3.5 million was provided by DCAL, £900k from the Sports Lottery Fund and the remainder from the Football Foundation The interim scheme ended in March 2003 and the following year SCNI opened a new more strategic Stadia Safety Programme. DCAL has provided c £9m over the last three years to help SCNI implement this programme.
